While BSF does include new school buildings, it is intended as far more than a simple building project. Using ICT to support new approaches to teaching and learning, the approach enables students to learn outside the normal school routine and offers access to a new and exciting range of information and resources. Through extended opening hours, the new facilities will be also available for use by the whole community.

In Bristol the programme’s objectives include increasing parental engagement, providing safer schools, creating active learners, enabling personalised and collaborative learning, and providing 24/7 access to resources. As the project has progressed, the partners have developed an integrated approach which combines new buildings, ICT, and opportunities for innovative ways of organising teaching and learning to support these objectives.
