During the project, the Skanska team has made sure that both design and construction have been as environmentally friendly as possible. The team has also taken the opportunity to communicate its commitment to the environment to students.

The new schools have many green features, including a high component of recycled material, passive ventilation, low carbon emission biomass boilers, and rainwater collection tanks with capacity to flush 20,000 toilets per week.

At Bristol Brunel Academy, the new building has achieved a 24.8% recycled content, while across the schools, 82% of construction waste has been recycled and only 6.6% of it has been removed from the site.

Throughout the schools, flat screen televisions and viewing panels provide displays and windows onto the buildings’ energy and water use, making environmental awareness part of the students’ daily lives.

Bob Rutherford of the Bristol City Council PFI Team is very happy with Skanska’s environmental performance. He says: “As the first Building Schools for the Future programme in the country we set some very stringent environmental performance targets. I am pleased to say that Skanska Bristol Schools have exceeded our targets and expectations.”
