Bristol Cathedral
Choir School
Bristol Cathedral Choir School (BCCS) became an Academy in September 2008 – the first choir school in the country to do so. At the time, it was also one of only four former fee-charging schools nationally to have become Academies.
Currently Bristol’s most over-subscribed school, BCCS is in the process of expanding from around 400 pupils in 2007 to about 700. The school specialises in Music, with Mathematics as a secondary specialism.
To help meet the growing demand for places, a major development programme to transform the school is taking place. It aims to provide defined curriculum bases for each of the school's five faculties that will assist teaching and improve the life chances of students for generations to come.
A delicate balancing act had to be undertaken to take into account a number of historic listed buildings while at the same time providing a first-class teaching and learning environment. The answer, and one that proved to be extremely cost-effective, was to remodel an existing building and also make use of an unused new office block on the site.
These two buildings have now been completed and work on a new theatre, refectory and arts area is under way.
